Houlder Group History
In 1911 the shipping company Furness Withy & Co (founded 1891) acquired a large shareholding in Houlder Brothers.
Both companies retained their own identities until 1963, when Furness Houlder Insurance (a Lloyd’s Broker) was formed out of the insurance departments of Furness and Houlder. In 1980 Furness Withy was purchased by the C Y Tung Group in Hong Kong and Furness Houlder Insurance continued unchanged.
In 1988 Houlder became independent from Furness Withy and China Merchants became a major shareholder. At this time we completed a full circle and became known as Houlder Insurance Services Ltd, with new livery.
Houlder Insurance (Far East), operating in Hong Kong and Beijing, is a sister company and one of the largest marine brokers in Hong Kong.
